Nowadays a message can be sent to a mass audience by many means of communications: the press, radio, TV and Internet. 2. Speaking
a) Speaking about mass media, we should keep in mind that they comprise both TV and press. What’s the history of the press?
 P1.: HISTORY OF THE NEWSPAPERS
The first newspapers were probably handwritten newssheet posted in public places. The earliest daily newssheet was “Astra Diurna” (“Daily Events”) which started in Rome in 59 B. C. the first printed newspaper was Chinese publication called “Dibao” (“Ti-Pao”) started in A.D. 700’s. It was printed from carved wooden blocks.  The first regulary published newspaper in Europe was “Avisa Relation” or “Zeitung”, started in Germany in 1609.
P2.:  HISTORY OF THE MAGAZINES
The earliest magazines developed from newspapers and booksellers catalogs. Such catalogs first appeared during the 1600’s in France. In the 1700’s pamphlets published at regular intervals appeared in England and America. They were literary publications. One of the first British magazines “The Gentleman’s Magazine” was published from 1731 to 1914. The first American magazine was called the “American Magazine”, or “A Monthly View”.
b)   Now listen to the poem by Stephen Crane and explain the author’s opinion on the role of the of the press in our world.
                        A NEWSPAPER
 A newspaper is a court,
A newspaper is a game
Where everyone is kindly and and unfairly tried,
Where his error scores the player victory
By a squalor of honest men.
While another’s skill wins death,
A newspaper is a market,
A newspaper is a symbol
Where wisdom sells its freedom.
it is a faultless life’s chronicle,
And melons are crowned by the crowd
A collection of loud tales.

Newspapers and magazines in Ukraine
Mass media consists of press, radio and TV.  Every day we read newspapers and magazines, listen to radio and watch TV. Nowadays there are so many newspapers and magazines can that we have to be very selective. Newspapers can be daily, weekly; magazines can be weekly, monthly or quarterly. I like to read the following newspapers: Arguments and Facts, The Day, Today and others. Some papers are published in English. They are: Day, Kyiv Weekly, Digest, Kyiv Post and Ukraine magazine. They give full attention to current events. Articles on the first page are editorial, they cover significant political, social and economic questions; they comment on foreign as well as home affairs. Other papers and magazines, such as The Free Life, Liberty, Caravan of Stories, English Club have a large circulation. Their publications deal with important problems of our history, latest events, keep people well-informed about cultural, educational, sports life. They present different points of view.
Post-reading task
Answer the following questions:
1)    Why we must be very selective reading the press?
2)    What types of newspapers and magazines do you know?
3)    What do the articles on the first page cover? How are they called?
4)    Do you know any newspapers and magazines published in English? Do you read them?
1.     Role play.
By to means, it’s wonderful to know English – you may read foreign press, watch English programmes on TV. But what do we know about British mass media? We are lucky. There is a talk show devoted to this matter on one channel.
                                    TALK SHOW
The host.  Hello, my name is Dasha! Welcome to our show “The point of view”. Today we are going to speak about mass media in Great Britain. Our guest is the editor-in- chief of the popular British newspaper “The Sun” Mrs Brown, as far as I know, the British are great newspaper readers.
Mrs Brown. That’s right. You can’t imagine the Englishman without a newspaper or magazine.
The host. What are the most popular papers?
Mrs Brown. the most popular papers are The Sun, Today, The Daily Mail, The Daily Mirror.
(The questions from the audience in the studio)
P1:  Mrs Brown, you remarked that the papers differ very much, in which way?
Mrs Brown. They differ in the type of news and the way they reported it. The daily press divided into two distinct groups: the quality press and the popular press. Quality papers are thick, well-written and speak about politics and current events. Popular papers have millions of readers. They are also called “tabloids” (small size paper). They speak about sports, fashion, crimes.
P2. Would you name some of the quality papers, please?
Mrs Brown. Certainly. They are  The Times, The Guardian, The Telegraph.
The host. Unfortunately our programme is coming to the end. Thanks a lot, Mrs Brown. See you soon!
